I can understand why potential program participants would be skeptical of PEP if they were in other programs that fell short of providing all the necessary tools to help them find a job. It sounds like Bread for the City has all the logistics worked out and that the organization provides all the support needed. Keep up the good work and congrats to Eric and all the other clients!

What if you partnered with a local university department and housed it with one of their graduate departments? A constant influx of students (most of whom don't have as many commitments as existing case work and nonprofit staff) might help to keep it updated, and it could also serve as a connector between the academic community, which is really good at compiling information, and the nonprofit sector, which actually provides the services.

Thank you for bringing this issue to light and beginning a conversation in the community. A resource network like this would not only provide much needed up to date information about services to those that wish to access them, but it could also transform the work of nonprofits and government agencies in the future by providing them with data about assets and needs. It the distant future it might even serve as a platform to hold service agencies accountable to the communities that they serve. I look forward to joining the conversation.

The Town has completed their "Quick Take" of our land and they are now free to do as they please with it, such as raze the orchard and barn. We need help! Just enjoying the memory of years ago being told "its not dirt, its soil, its earth". Dirt is inert. Soil has life! It is alive with microorganisms and nutrients. I just loved the way Rosa talk about her mother talking about "planting in the earth."

I am a donor to the project and it makes me very happy to share her joy - even though I am not there.

How about pleasant and clean communal spaces to eat? In most of the low-income neighborhoods in DC, all food must be purchased quickly, eaten out of a box and disposed of outside. With so few places to sit down and enjoy a meal with friends and family, how can we build community?
This requires input from the private sector on why sit-down eating establishments don't exist in low income neighborhoods.

No one should have to go around the barn to seek great customer service skills, to reach a person the cares about what you’re going through.
My point exactly, these government programs are created to aid, help and assist in medical, cash, and food stamps, child support, education, work programs and ect. The problem isn’t just with the government but with civilization as well. We have a voice that can promote change for ourselves and others whom may come to need support from the public assistance programs. If we chose not speak up on the problems, concerns, and solution, how then can we expect change or for them to make the time to hear from the people, if we are silent. We are not mind readers. We must stand up for what is right for the community. Our people are struggling, afraid to stand and fight for a cause, believed that what they have to say isn’t important. When we do matter and there are programs out there to help like ‘Bread for the City” for starters.

My name's Brennan, and I work on digital outreach at Catholic Charities right down the street.

Love where you're going right at the end. I'd like to see greater flexibility for individuals on SNAP when they purchase food items. While most grocery stores carry fresh vegetables, these vegetables have to be shipped--sometimes from hundreds of miles away. That means crucial nutrients have already been destroyed. Access to fresh markets or farmers markets would ensure that these individuals can find healthier foods and prepare healthier meals. Look forward to reading the next part of your series.
