Breaking News: Bread for the City Gets Eggs!

Eggplants!

Last week, Bread for the City got its first monthly shipment of eggs! Financed by a team of four donors who work for the egg industry in Washington, this is one of those things we could never have done by ourselves. So far it has been a huge hit. When I talked to Jenette (our Food Pantry Coordinator in NW) she told me that, when she and the volunteers saw the eggs being unloaded, they were “overcome with excitement.”

There’s a lot to be excited about. According to the American Egg Board, eggs are rich in 13 essential nutrients including protein and iron. They also help with weight management, brain function, and muscle strength. All of this before we consider the important fact that eggs are a wonderfully versatile ingredient in almost every style of cuisine.

I was sick almost all of last week, so I didn’t get to see the eggs arrive. :( I’ll get some pictures next month along with maybe some other shots of all the produce we’ve been getting. In the meantime, thank you to our donors for providing such an egg-ceptional ingredient to the low-income residents we serve!

Hate to be a wet blanket here, and I know having choices in one's diet is a function of privilege. But I'm a Bread for the City donor, so I figure I should speak up.

Eggs are extremely high in cholesterol. They're also the source of some of the worst cruelty in the business of animal agriculture. More information here.

Hi A,

Thank you for speaking up. Eggs are high in cholesterol, and we're lucky because the cartons the eggs come in list the full nutrition facts. Our nutrition consultant is also doing one-on-one interviews (and larger cooking classes) to talk about maintaining a balanced diet.

Admittedly, I'm not extraordinarily well-informed about animal agriculture business practices. That said, our eggs come from Saunder's. I'm told they have pretty high standards.

Keep giving feedback, and thank you very much for your generosity!
